For 50 years, the Oklahoma Foundation for Medical Quality has been a trailblazer in quality improvement.
Founded in 1972 by what is now the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the Oklahoma Foundation for Peer Review (OFPR) was formed under the laws of Oklahoma as a nonprofit cooperation. Our original purpose was to provide a professionally controlled vehicle to assume PSRO (Professional Standards Review Organization) responsibilities if, and when, that became necessary.
As years passed, there began to be an air of change in the type of work performed by OFPR as we started to comply with the requirements of both federal and state contracts, and we started to include more consumer interaction. With the requirement to function as a continuous quality improvement organization within the medical community, it became clear that the Peer Review designation was not descriptive of the functions of the organization anymore. As the Health Care Quality Improvement Program (HCQIP) continued to develop, the name was changed to reflect the new direction and vision of the cooperation. So, in July of 1995, OFPR became the Oklahoma Foundation for Medical Quality.
Since we became OFMQ, our nonprofit organization has carried out important CMS initiatives and developed community outreach programs that have directly improved the quality of health care, especially in Oklahoma. Through its Health Care Quality Improvement Program (HCQIP), OFMQ has established partnerships and built strong relationships within every sector of the health care system, including hospitals, physicians, managed care organizations, medical associations, and consumers over our 50 years as an organization. We continue to strengthen our existing partnerships, create new ties, and serve our state proudly.
